Towards Carbon Neutrality: Biobased PSA Combining Performance and Sustainability

As known, the EU is committed to reach Carbon neutrality within 2050 and reduction of greenhouse gases is becoming increasingly important for the industry. To this end, the introduction of biobased building blocks in the formulation of PSA represents one of the preferred routes to improve the carbon footprint of the final product. In this study, commercially available bio-based monomers are used to develop a product portfolio of waterborne and UV hotmelt PSAs with renewable content ranging from 50% to 70% and covering a large variety of applications. A characterization of the main adhesive properties of the biobased products is carried out and compared with fossil-based counterparts, showing that similar performances can be achieved with renewable formulations. Eventually, LCA calculations are presented to quantify the beneficial impact on Carbon footprint of bio-based PSAs over the traditional ones thus contributing to increase their sustainability profile.
